Carrie Underwood was born Carrie Marie Underwood on March 10th, 1983 in
Muskogee, Oklahoma and was raised on a farm in nearby Checotah,
Oklahoma. She was not straight from the farm as everyone supposed, but
had attempted a singing career when she was thirteen, with her manager
attempting to get her a recording contract. At the time, she was too
young to impress the record execs at Capitol Records. Her high school
salutatorian, Carrie went to Northeaster State University where she
competed in many beauty pageants, becoming the Miss NSU runner-up in
2004. A singer, pianist, guitarist, and even a yodeler, Carrie has
always preferred country music, but when she was selected for the 4th
American Idol competition in 2005, she was able to demonstrate an
ability to excel in a variety styles.
After her win, Carrie received a recording contract with Arista Records,
and her first single "Inside Your Heaven," was released on June 14th,
2005. It debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Carrie has sung
the National Anthem at sports events and has appeared in commercials,
notably for Hershey's Chocolate. Her second single, "Jesus, Take the
Wheel," came out that same year has been an even greater hit,
due in part to considerable radio airplay. In November 2005, her album
appeared in the stores. It became #1 on the Billboard Top Country
Albums chart and was the biggest debut of any country artist since 1990.
It became double platinum early the next year, becoming the fastest
selling country album in the history of Nielsen SoundScan.
[Carrie is one of the few significant artists to come from Oklahoma, another
recent musical entry being the All American Rejects, best known
for their hit "Dirty Little Secret" and their 2005 album "Move Along."]
People interested in Carrie would likely also be
interested in "Where are you Christmas" Faith Hill or
a Faith Hill biography, to read the parallels between the two excellent
country singers.
